About Somerset

A Growth Company from the Beginning

When Tim Williams and Melvin “Mac” Godby formed a business partnership in 1988 to acquire a local food distribution business in Somerset, Kentucky they had a notion that the business could be grown. Their instincts were correct. The company grew from a small distribution business specializing in frozen food to a distributor that offers a broad selection of foodservice products in eleven states. Williams, who would work through the night in the early years said: “We felt if we could do the things that we thought we could, it would be favorable for everyone.” Williams said they thought they could bring new products and personal service to customers that would allow the business to find a position in the rapidly expanding food distribution business. In just over 20 years in business, Somerset Foodservice grew from a $2 million small business to a $105 million dollar company that employs over 135 people in the Lake Cumberland region of Kentucky.

The company invested heavily in technology and was one of the industry pioneers of scanning technology for inbound and outbound deliveries. With progressive management and dedicated employees in place, Somerset Foodservice became a regional leader in servicing the needs of customers.

Our Future

On December 18, 2009, a dream-come-true was realized when Somerset Foodservice was acquired by the foodservice giant PERFORMANCE Foodservice, based in Richmond, Va. With the resources, brands and opportunities that the nation’s third largest broadline foodservice distributor had to offer, it positioned PERFORMANCE- Somerset to become an even more important partner to the foodservice operators in the eleven state delivery area.

PERFORMANCE- Somerset division president Tommy Jones has worked his entire professional life in the foodservice business. He owned and operated a restaurant before joining Somerset Foodservice in 1987. “It’s personalized service and the interest we take in our customer’s businesses that set us apart.” Jones, who was previously the company’s general manager, has led several new company initiatives, including training programs offered for customers so that they can improve efficiency and increase profitability in their operations. These innovative programs have helped introduce new concepts to operators, such as catering opportunities for restaurateurs as well as school and institutional foodservice directors.

Operations have continued as usual and with the same knowledgeable and friendly area managers who provide helpful consulting services to their customers. With quality brands and efficient deliveries being offered, everything is in place to welcome our customers to the winning team!
